Seven categories, seven price points

Each step up in size buys more cabin and more range, and costs more per hour. The cheapest aircraft for a trip is the smallest one that flies it nonstop with your group and bags on board.

Under 90 minutes

Turboprop

PC-12 and King Air 350 class. The lowest hourly cost of any category and access to short runways. Cruise speed is lower, so the same route takes roughly a third longer than in a light jet, which matters less the shorter the trip.

Small groups

Very light jet

HondaJet and Citation M2 class. Jet speed at a lower hourly cost for up to four or five passengers on trips of about two and a half hours or less. Baggage space is the constraint.

Most requested

Light jet

Phenom 300E, Citation CJ4 and Learjet 75 class. The workhorse for one- to three-hour trips with up to six or seven passengers. Typical routes: Teterboro to Palm Beach, Van Nuys to Las Vegas.

Midsize jet

Citation XLS+ class. A taller cabin, a proper baggage hold and a comfortable four hours of flying. Worth the extra hourly cost when the trip is long or the luggage is bulky.

Coast to coast

Super-midsize jet

Challenger 350, Citation Longitude and Praetor 600 class. Six-foot cabin, transcontinental range. On a long trip it can beat a smaller jet on total cost by avoiding a fuel stop.

Groups and oceans

Large cabin jet

G450, Challenger 650 and Falcon 2000LXS class. Ten or more seats, separate cabin zones and transatlantic range. The hourly cost is high, but per seat it can compare well for a full group.

Ultra long range jet
